It opened in 2008 and was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snohetta, author of other projects such as the Norwegian embassy in Berlin, and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt.
Inspired by an iceberg rising from the sea, the opera is entirely covered in white marble and glass, together with solar panels. The complex, built with a total budget of 528 million euros, goes to the very edge of the water in the bay Bjørvika.

The base: is the size of four football fields of international standard size, this means about 38,000 m2. The entire building contains a total of 1,100 rooms, divided into different sections.
The main lobby, consisting of an open space with minimalist decor and use of simple materials such as stone, concrete, glass and wood. It also has endless possibilities lighting and view of the surroundings. It has seating area, cafes, bars, restaurants and guardarropa.Desde here, the public has a view of Oslo Fjord.
The main auditorium, has capacity for 1,350 spectators and is built like a classic horseshoe on several levels, with a high ceiling that produces natural acoustics. Here too the tone is determined by simple materials like wood. In contrast to the bright side of the lobby, main auditorium is decorated in ammonia-treated oak.
Apart from the main stage and the revolving stage, Opera includes two side stages, stage one subscenario rear. Parts of the stage are located 16 meters below sea level.
Chandelier, is the largest spider in Norway. It is 7 meters in diameter, weighs 8 tons, has more than 8,000 LEDs and 5,800 glass elements and glass. The huge building was designed by light Snøhetta and produced by the glass factory. The chandelier also fulfills a function in the main auditorium acoustics.
