Pitching Your Tent

It may sound like stating the obvious, but it’s a well known fact that many people go on camping trips before ever having erected their tent previously. If you’re not familiar with pitching your tent, this can be disastrous, especially if your first attempt is on some wild, wet and windy moor. So, it’s important that you’ve had a go at pitching your tent in your back garden or some other suitable place before you take it on a trip. It could save you hours. Not only that, if you’ve never pitched the tent before you head off on your trip, you might find that there are bits and pieces of the equipment missing which could even mean it can’t be used at all. Air Bed or Mat When Camping?

Deciding on an inflatable air bed or a simple sleeping ground pad, the important thing is to pick one which is comfortable for when you’re sleeping on uneven or hard ground. The best sleeping bag in the world won’t provide you with a restful sleep if you’re tossing and turning all night.

Not only do they provide extra comfort, they also form an additional layer of insulation between you and the ground which will further prevent heat loss.

How do they Work?

Sleeping pads work by trapping and holding a layer of dead (non-circulating) air between your body and the cold – in this case, the cold ground. Your body heat warms this layer of dead air and it becomes an insulation barrier. The performance of the insulation pad depends on how much air it holds and how freely the air is able to circulate. Camping Cold Weather

Even during the late summer, you can suddenly experience a chilly evening/night or run into a ‘cold snap’, so it’s handy to take along an extra fleece or sweater just in case.

However, this article focuses more on those who choose to go camping whatever the weather and how to be prepared for the sharp drop in temperature which makes camping in cold weather markedly different than a summer trip.

Winter or anytime cold weather is forecast is not the time to go camping solo. You should always camp with others and should leave an itinerary with a friend or family member, telling them where you’re heading and when you expect to return. Continue reading

Packing and Pitching

Everyone who’s been camping for any length of time has a camping disaster story to tell: a tent that leaked, a tent that got washed away, a tent that got blown away or a tent that defied all attempts to be erected in the first place. However, there’s no reason why any of these calamities should necessary befall you. 26 Cheap Camping Tips

This list is HUGE. Here are my favorite ideas:

  1. Channel lock pliers make good pot holders.
  2. Nylon rope can be used as shoe laces.
  3. Use a large zip lock plastic bag, filled with air, as a pillow.
  4. A plastic bottle makes a good latrine for cold weather camping. (You don’t
have to ‘go’ very far from your sleeping bag). Keep it just outside the tent flap.
  5. Carry several pieces of lumber cut into two-inch squares to summer camp and
use these to level platform, tent, and cot. Continue reading

Camping Tips

Follow these safety camping tips and make the best out of your camping:

  • Make camp before dark. Traveling after darkness has resulted in many accidents from falls, so travel during daylight whenever possible.
  • Check for potential hazards. Be sure to check thoroughly for glass, sharp objects, branches, large ant beds, poison ivy, bees and hazardous terrain.
  • Avoid areas of natural hazards. Check the contour of the land and for potential trouble due to rain.
  • Inspect the site. Look for a level site with enough room to spread your gear.
  • Build fires in a safe area. Your open fires and fuel burning appliances must be far enough away from the tent to prevent ignition from sparking flames and heat. Continue reading
